The Houston Black Expo is proud to be a part of the City of Houston’s small business and entrepreneurial community where thousands of small businesses reside with an exceptional representation of minority business owners. It is our goal to celebrate the spirit of entrepreneurship and encourage those who live their lives “on the edge” to realize their small business dreams.
The HBE Valor Awards appreciate and applaud the spirit of small businesses in the Greater Houston area during an event that is held in the fall of the calendar year. Business owners and locals in the Greater Houston area nominate their favorite businesses in a number of varied categories including:
• Making Brick without Straw Award (aka Powerful with a Penny Award) —Awarded to a business owner that demonstrates the ability to do a lot with a little, starting a successful business with little to no money.
• I’m Soaring with the Eagles! Going National Award—Awarded to a local business that has recently gone national by doing business in other cities, being awarded national contracts, etc.
• Web of Dreams: Most Innovative Internet Business Award—Awarded to a business that makes creative use of the Internet to host a business idea.
• Why Didn’t I Think of That? Creative Business Idea Award—Awarded to an entrepreneur that has begun a business with a highly creative business idea that most people would have never thought of.
• Taking It to the Next Level! Award—Awarded to a business 5 years or younger with a sales increase of at least $100,000 in the past year.
• Oh, What an Inspiration! Award—Awarded to a business that was started as a result of hardship, the overcoming of a life challenge, or other difficulty and that has become a success story to inspire all who hear of it.
• Wonder Woman Award—Awarded to a woman-owned business that has succeeded in beating the odds by establishing a successful business.
• HBE Small Business of the Year Award—Awarded at the discretion of the HBE organization to the business that exemplifies all of the characteristics of creativity, determination to overcome great odds, and success.
